Dropbox recently notified its users that it will soon be phasing out its native Google Docs, Sheets and Slides integration. Instead of the files, shortcuts will be used to access them. As a consequence of the Google Workspace transition, you will be required to move your Dropbox files to Google Drive within 30 days from when the notification has been sent. If this process isn’t carried out in due time, the files will be automatically changed to Microsoft Office formats.
Dropbox has enabled its users to edit Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides without ever having to leave the site since 2018. This feature allows them to quickly create, edit & share the necessary documents in the same place.
Dropbox has formed a unique partnership with Google Cloud, providing users with the ability to utilize their own editors for Docs, Sheets, and Slides files without Google Drive. This exciting collaboration is allowing users to leave behind cumbersome tools and processes. After 5 years, the relationship between Dropbox and its users is transforming. Users now have the option of switching to Google Drive, where their files will be replaced with shortcuts, or they can access them through Microsoft Office.
If you are a Dropbox user and have ever used Google functionality, make sure to look out for an email from them with the title “[Action Required] Migrating your Google files”. Such an email contains information about how the migration process should be done.
If thirty days elapse without linking Google Drive to Dropbox, all the Google Workspace docs stored in Dropbox will be transformed into Microsoft Office files automatically.
Migrating to Google Drive may cause you to lose some of your advanced sharing settings like password protection. Fortunately, this can be avoided by preserving these settings before the move. Google Drive enables you to easily convert Microsoft Office documents back into Google format. However, please be aware that some of the formatting may not remain intact or could change during the process.
You can integrate Google Workspace with various cloud storage providers like Box for similar functionality. The procedure is the same for each of them.
It is currently uncertain if Dropbox’s collaborations with other apps will be terminated or if Dropbox itself has decided to discontinue the Google Docs integration.
