Ottawa coffee shop “Morning Owl,” owned by Todd Simpson, has rebranded the classic Americano as “Canadiano” in protest of US President Donald Trump’s annexation threats, reports CTV News writer William Eltherington. The playful menu change, marked with a red and white maple leaf flag, aims to “make light of a serious situation” while affirming Canadian identity amid growing trade tensions.
“We don’t need any American products right now,” Simpson explained from his Laurier Avenue location. “It seems like a really good way to say we’re Canadian.”
The idea came from a friend who noticed similar actions by other businesses. The menu board now prominently displays “Canadiano” alongside a red and white maple leaf flag, offering the traditional combination of espresso and hot water under its new patriotic name.
BC-based Kicking Horse Coffee has also adopted the “Canadiano” rebrand, joining a movement of Canadian companies emphasizing their national heritage. Other businesses have been highlighting their “proudly Canadian” brand and choosing “Made in Canada” products.
“It’s a conversation piece. It’s a good laugh,” Simpson said, reflecting the determined yet good-humoured Canadian response to escalating US pressure and tariff threats that have fueled a “buy Canadian” sentiment nationwide.
