Australia Says NO to Foreign Students – Approval Rates Hit Record Low

Are you interested in studying in Australia?

You may have a slightly harder time now.

According to the ICEF Monitor, Australia is expected to accept around 90,000 fewer students in 2023 – 2024 compared to the year prior.

For the past 15 years, the student visa application approval rate ran at well over 90%, but last year it fell to 82%. For vocational education, the rate dropped to a low of 70% in the six months to December 2023, according to new government data.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government is attempting to reduce the number of immigrants coming into the country since the country’s borders were opened in late 2021, with a particular emphasis on reducing entry for ‘non-genuine’ students.

The escalation of this figure coupled with the upsurge in migration amid the pandemic has ignited a housing dilemma. This breeds profound discontent among the Australian populace, as escalating rents exacerbate the cost-of-living crisis for voters.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said that Australia’s migration numbers needed to be wound back to a “sustainable level,” adding that “the system is broken.”

Australia ultimately aims to halve migrant intake for the next two years. The government aims to do this by requiring international students to score higher ratings on English tests. It will also end settings that allow students to prolong their stay in Australia.
