Asia’s ‘El Chapo’ Is Facing Trial In Australia

News Asia 360

One of the world’s most wanted men, who was allegedly the head of Asia’s biggest crime syndicate, has been extradited to Australia from the Netherlands and arrested for drug smuggling.

Tse Chi Lop’s arrest is a result of a long-running investigation into his “Sam Gor” or “The Company”, a syndicate he leads that is responsible for trafficking methamphetamine worth millions of dollars into Australia. This drug money was then laundered through casinos, hotels and properties in certain parts of Indo-China.

Tse is expected to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court to answer a number of charges made against him. He faces life in prison if convicted.

Tse is dubbed the “El Chapo” of Asia, with a nickname derived from that of the famous Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman. His arrest at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport in January 2021 was hailed as “one of the most high-profile arrests” ever by the Australian police.
