Angkor Wat’s Global Recognition: A Cambodian Treasure Makes Traveler’s Choice Top 12 List

News Asia 360

Cambodia’s crown jewel, Angkor Wat, has secured a prestigious spot on the world stage! Prime Minister Hun Manet announced that TripAdvisor’s Traveler Choice Awards 2024 ranked Angkor Wat as the 12th best tourist attraction globally.

This recognition isn’t surprising. Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its intricate carvings and awe-inspiring architecture.

This sprawling temple complex serves as the centerpiece of the Angkor Archaeological Park, a 401 square kilometer wonderland containing the remains of 91 temples built between the 9th and 13th centuries.

Angkor Wat’s popularity continues its upward trajectory.

The first five months of 2024 witnessed a remarkable 37% surge in international visitors compared to the same period last year. This translates to a staggering 472,258 tourists who flocked to marvel at the ancient wonder.

The increased tourism isn’t just about foot traffic; it translates to significant economic benefits for Cambodia. Ticket sales during the January-May period reached 22.2 million US dollars, a 38% year-on-year jump.

These figures solidify Angkor Wat’s position as a major Cambodian tourist draw, attracting international travelers and fueling the country’s economic engine.

But Angkor Wat is more than just a tourist attraction; walking its grounds allows visitors to step back in time and explore the legacy of the Khmer Empire.

The intricate carvings offer a glimpse into the lives, beliefs, and artistic expressions of those who built this magnificent complex centuries ago.

Cambodia’s rich history and cultural offerings extend beyond Angkor Wat. The mysterious Ta Prohm Temple, where ancient ruins intertwine with lush jungle growth, also secured a spot on the list.

For those interested in exploring Cambodia’s architectural heritage, Bayon Temple with its fascinating carvings is another TripAdvisor-recommended destination. And for a deeper understanding of the country’s past, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum provides a moving and informative look at a significant historical period.
