Twitter users have been going through an emotional roller coaster. The change of Twitter’s brand to X, has been met with a number of reactions. From hate, love, and cautious waiting, to indifference.

Of course, through the various discussions on Twitter, many users can only speculate Musk’s intention. And many others, criticise the move as a sin against branding.

Yesterday, a tweet regarding famous “companies that changed their names”, has sparked more in-depth discussion around the controversial change. These discussions prompted Elon Musk to finally respond.

In Musk’s response, he details his vision and why Twitter had to change.

Twitter was acquired by X Corp both to ensure freedom of speech and as an accelerant for X, the everything app. This is not simply a company renaming itself, but doing the same thing.

The Twitter name made sense when it was just 140 character messages going back and forth – like birds tweeting – but now you can post almost anything, including several hours of video. In the months to come, we will add comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world. The Twitter name does not make sense in that context, so we must bid adieu to the bird.
