A Husband’s Gaming Addiction Destroys a Wife’s Life

News Asia 360

A Chinese woman, Lao Chunxue (28), became tragically blind after suffering brutal abuse at the hands of her husband, Xie (30). This horrific turn of events stemmed from Xie’s crippling gambling addiction.

Despite initial arguments about his gaming obsession, Lao married Xie two years ago after he showed her care. However, their struggles to find work in Henan province escalated Xie’s addiction. In a desperate attempt to fuel his habit, he demanded 10,000 yuan (RM6,061) from Lao on March 19, 2023. When she refused due to lack of funds, Xie subjected her to a violent assault.

The attack included punches, a frying pan blow, and ultimately strangulation with pajama bottoms. Thankfully, Lao’s cousin intervened, finding her unconscious. Rushed to the hospital, Lao spent three months in a coma due to intracranial bleeding. The trauma left her permanently blind and unable to care for herself.

Lao’s parents, devastated by their daughter’s condition, have shouldered immense financial burdens. They’ve spent a significant amount of money, even mortgaging their home, but doctors hold little hope for restoring Lao’s vision. The situation worsened when Lao discovered Xie had secretly transferred their car to his mother’s name.

Following police intervention, Xie received an 11-year prison sentence and was ordered to pay 657,000 yuan (RM398,000) in compensation. However, Lao’s parents are appealing the verdict, seeking a life sentence for their daughter’s abuser. This case has sparked outrage online in China, with many questioning the leniency of Xie’s punishment.
