2024: Things I Want To Forget

Just like any other year, I had ups and downs in 2024 too. Some things went great. Some didn’t go that great and a few things that happened were pretty nasty to me—which I’d rather just leave behind and forget the entire episodes.

There are three things which are at the top of that list. I just want to forget and ditch them completely out of my system. The first one was the idea of going back to employment. What was I thinking? After more than 10 years of enjoying the fruits of entrepreneurship, I made the terrible decision to take a Marketing Director job in Penang. The six months I spent there were terrible. I wasn’t happy at all. The red flags were a stark reminder of why I left the employment world in the first place. Everything you can imagine when it comes to employment’s red flags happened there. Let’s just say it was a valuable lesson learned—never again.

The other thing I’m happy to leave behind in 2024 is those so-called friends who don’t stand up with their friends for the right reasons. They prefer to side with evil instead. These are the friends I no longer need. The other type of friends I am ditching before the year ends are those who seem to remember me when they need something. I’m tired of being the one who always initiates contact, the one who always checks in and the one who always drops a text or calls to say hello. All are in the name of staying in touch. They didn’t get the memo that friendships are a two-way street, and I’m done investing my energy in relationships that feel one-sided.

I want to forget, no, ditch could be a better word, my bad habit of helping people who don’t want to be helped. I guess old habits are hard to die. In 2024, it happened too many times. I should’ve known better that the kindest thing I can do for someone is to just listen to their problems when they come to me and that’s it. There’s no need for me to suggest things or share ideas. Let them figure things out on their own. Forcing myself to help someone who isn’t receptive can be counterproductive and a waste of time.

Here’s to a better 2025.
